What is the ASTRA™ Arvis® Augmented Reality System?
ASTRA™ Arvis® is an FDA-cleared system to help your surgeon visualize precision guidance when performing hip and knee surgery with the support of augmented reality.
What is Augmented Reality?
Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that allows us to see our real-life environment with a digital augmentation overlay. AR is used in many ways, including social media filters, gaming and various shopping apps that allow you to try on clothing or visualize furniture in your space before purchasing.
ASTRA™ Arvis® enables this technology through highly precise trackers and cameras designed for incredible precision in a medical setting. This helps surgeons place and align implants during surgery. Unlike other traditional robotic systems that require additional staff, ASTRA™ Arvis® is a self-contained, wearable surgical guidance device controlled by the surgeon. ASTRA™ Arvis® is designed to ensure surgeons can focus on you – not a screen across the room – by empowering them to view of the surgical field and your tailored surgical plan simultaneously.
How Does It Work?
ASTRA™ Arvis® combines tracking cameras with a 3D display and hands-free interface in an integrated eyepiece. ASTRA™ Arvis® is the first system with proprietary hardware designed to assist in precisely placing hip, knee, and shoulder joint replacements aimed at tailoring procedures to your specific anatomy.
At the start of the procedure, the surgeon places landmarks on your hip or knee, which builds a “map” of your unique anatomy in the system. This information is used to provide real-time information and helps the surgeon visualize the best placement and fit of the final implant.
The ASTRA™ Arvis® eyepiece, controlled by the surgeon, contains all the equipment needed to track landmarks, and provides information directly to the surgeon. Cameras mounted at the surgeon’s viewpoint track reusable markers to provide accurate navigation guidance for total hip, total knee, unicompartmental knee, and total shoulder arthroplasty. ASTRA™ Arvis® is designed to aid with accurate implant placement1 in a streamlined, space-conserving, and cost-effective2,3 manner as compared to traditional robotics.
What Are The Benefits?
- Tailored to You. ASTRA™ Arvis® uses augmented reality technology to give your surgeon information about your unique knee or hip. This helps your surgeon know how to accurately place your hip or knee implant to give you a more tailored fit.
- The Surgeon is in Control. The system is entirely controlled by your surgeon’s head movements and voice commands – rather than a robot or other personnel in the room.
